About

Akumal was officially founded in 1958 as a community for scuba divers by Pablo Bush Romero, a Mexican businessman, diver, writer, historian, and archeologist.

The CEA (Centro Ecologico Akumal) is dedicated to environmental research, education, and sea turtle protection. The local hotels, dives shops, and CEA are working with government authorities to run a bay management program aimed at protecting the resident juvenile sea turtles and coral species in Akumal Bay.

Akumal is a Mayan word that means "Place of the Turtles," as it has been and still is one of their favorite spots to nest and is the only place in the Riviera Maya that you can observe turtles all year round in the main bay.

To return some of the love and respect to this beautiful bay, visitors are encouraged to shower with neutral soap before entering the bay and to use biodegradable suntanning lotions or wear a rash guard or dive skin for protection from the sun.

THANKS FOR PROTECTING AKUMAL MARINE LIFE!
